The Lorax: A Hilarious Tale about Loving our Home

Author & Illustrator: Dr. Suess

I think every child has dreamed of cotton candy trees. In ‘The Lorax’ by the world renowned Dr. Suess, these beauties are very much a reality. Filled with a captivating storyline, illuminous illustrations, and an ever important message, this book is one that every child should read.

The Lorax loved his homeland and he had never faced any resistance for it until the fateful day when a merchant arrived. Cotton candy trees? To the Lorax, they were a symbol of nature’s beauty, yet to the merchant they represented the crucial ingredient to a blooming business. The Lorax begged and begged for the merchant not to chop down the trees; he reminded the merchant of the millions and millions of animals that depended on them as a home; he taught him about the value of these trees. But before he knew it, the Lorax’s hometown was reduced to a bound and barren land, ridden with the pollution of factories. The animals were forced to move out, and trees became more and more scarce.

However, the effects of industrialization were not only felt by the Lorax and his friends, but also by its very perpetrator: the merchant. As he continued to chop down the trees without control, he eventually ran out. No industry, no consumers, not even a single of his profit-making tree was left, and he was filled with immense regret.

What became of Lorax's beloved hometown? We will never know. But, the book does end on a grimly hopeful note with the Lorax’s presentation of a final seed to the merchant, giving him a final chance at redemption. Aside from being a book, this story has also been adapted into a popular cartoon, making it a perfect tale for children and parents alike of all ages.
