To keep “Read to Feed” participants informed of where their donations go, they will know which projects their donations will benefit before the program launches. Therefore, they can follow the development of our projects closely, and receive more substantial information such as the local condition, the difficulties farmers encounter, the help offered by Heifer, and how the lives of recipient families have improved.
Donations collected in the academic year 2023-24 will be allocated to support grassroot children in Hong Kong by giving away qualitied Chinese and English story books through schools and regional organizations. Estimated benefit around 2,000 needy students, while the remaining will be used to support 800 disadvantaged smallholder farmer families from Nagu Township, Huize County in Yunnan to achieve a sustainable livelihood.
Covering 8 villages in Nagu Township in Yunnan, the project aims to support 800 disadvantaged rural families to develop eco-friendly farming that integrates animal husbandry with crop cultivation, which will help stabilize rural employment and improve farmers' income. The township has over 20,000 farmer families, of which about 25% are low-income households. Many older villagers cannot earn a living as migrant workers and are at high risk of returning to poverty.
The villagers have low productivity as a result of inadequate infrastructure and outdated farming techniques. Their reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides has led to environmental pollution and food safety issues, negatively impacting on sustainable development. Lacking overall planning and coordinated efforts for development, the smallholder farmers are deprived of bargaining power and market competitiveness. Even though the local environment is suitable for farming and animal husbandry, the villagers are unable to develop it.
How does Heifer Hong Kong help?
To help struggling farmers develop agricultural production, we provide them with good quality breed of cattle and training in livestock raising techniques. In order to diversify their income sources, some smallholder farmers will also learn how to manage fruit tree cultivation. We also train farmers in forage planting and organic fertilizer production to reduce pollution and improve the environment.
Moreover, we facilitate the development of farmer cooperatives, enabling them to provide centralized procurement and sales services, promote and develop production standards, as well as build connections with corporations. All these serve to maximize the farmers’ benefits from the market.
Through "Passing on the Gift", the project recipients will pass on the equivalent worth of their gifted livestock, knowledge and skills they have learned to help other families in need, multiplying the project's impact and achieving sustainable community development.
